Marathon training

15 mi 02:08 08:33 pace

I was so nervous for this run because I had to go by myself, and it is the most I've run at one time. I wanted to run the whole time and when I WANTED to walk, I had to reduce my pace instead. I also did not want to stop my watch at all. I met these goals and felt good after the run. It was really windy up on the Geneva trail. My headphones were being blown out of my ears and my one leg was being blown into my other leg by a really strong side wind. I got to see a deer today! It was awesome, but it startled me as I came around a corner!

Lake to Lake Relay Leg 2

Team "Damnsoles in distress". Lindsay, Laura and me.

The hand off.

Leg 2: 4.26 mi 00:36 08:31 pace

WOW! We live in a world with so much beauty! This run was slower than my last leg, but I was okay with that because it was up big hills. I just wanted to run the whole time and I did! So much fun being in the sun! Bring on spring!

So happy to be finished with that leg! It is called "The Dirty Hill Climber" for a good reason!

All done! Now off to Texas Roadhouse for some yummy food!

Lake to Lake Relay Leg 1

Done with my 1st leg. 5.16 mi 00:38 07:20 pace

So BEAUTIFUL!!! Loved this run! Weather was perfect!

Getting ready for leg 1.

Draper Trails and Neighborhood with friends

12.19 mi 02:12 10:49 pace

This was Saturday. We were so busy yesterday, I didn't get a chance to post. Went with friends and had a great time! I was worried about the wind all night. I woke up, looked outside and thought we might beat the rain. Then as we met up it started raining with strong winds. At first I thought it was going to be a tough 12 miles, but it wasn't bad at all!

Sweethearts 5K

3.1 mi 00:24 07:37 pace

I had such a great time at the Sweethearts 5K with family and friends! Tom ran it too and did it in just over 10 minute miles which is really great since he hasn't been running and has had a hurt back. I was waiting for the official results to post this run because I forgot to turn off my watch again. They did post some results and it said my time was longer than what my watch said even with the additional time before I remembered to turn it off. Then they took those results down and said they were wrong. So, I will just wait to see if they DO get them posted. 2/15/11: The results were posted yesterday so here is my standing: They used gun times rather than the time from the timing chips. My watch said shorter than their time, even with me forgetting to turn it off. They show my time as 23:54. I was 2nd in my division, 8th in women overall and 47th out of 455 overall.

A long run on my own.

11 mi 01:32 08:21 pace

I missed my friends today :(. Seems so much longer on my own. I wasn't supposed to go this far today. My training plan said to do an 11 miler this week, but last week called for a shorter run on Sat and we did 10. I was just supposed to flip flop those weeks and go shorter today since I have a 5K Sat and can't go long this Sat. So...the scream was unwarranted last Sat. when I saw the deer carcass. But my scream was warranted today when the homeless man popped out from under the bridge. I think I scared him too. One reason I went farther is that I was scared to go back, and I didn't have a choice. When I finally did go back, he wasn't there anymore. I felt bad that I forced him out of his shelter that was keeping him out of the wind and it made me so grateful for my home, but felt so sad for him.

Getting into Marathon training

10.04 mi 01:47 10:39 pace

Weather was just right considering it was supposed to snow today! Went with Laura and Anne...such great company! The run went really fast going with them. We saw a fox! Laura tried to take a pic, but it was too far away. It kept turning and looking at us and then running away. We also saw a nasty deer carcass. I about tripped on it and screamed! Then Laura and Anne screamed too! I wanted to keep going after our 10, but Laura said I shouldn't. Especially since it was supposed to be a taper week. She knows so much more than me, so I listened to her. I know this sounds crazy, but I can't wait to get into our 20 mile runs!

New Year's Day 5K

Me and my trophy!

Cousins & sisters at the New Year's Day 5K! Me, Sheri, Wendy and Bridgette.

3.1 mi 00:25 07:58 pace

Had a great time doing this event with cousins. It was pretty cold (10 degrees), but at least it was double digits ;)! I finished 5th overall in the Women's 5K and 3rd in my division. I even got a trophy!

The Utah Human Race-Thanksgiving

Amy (Hayley's sister), Hayley, Sheri and I.

6.24 mi 00:51 08:10 pace

My watch said the mileage was 6.24. The extra .04 could have been weaving in and out of people. I placed 1st in my division. I have done 6.2 in 49 minutes several times so I was hoping for a faster pace. I guess the conditions of having to weave in and out of people, running on some icy spots and the cold made it hard. It was 7 degrees outside, but so worth getting out there! I didn't sleep well the night before because I was worried about the cold. There was a guy in front of me that had frost all over his hat. I wondered if he rolled in the snow before the race. When I got to the finish line I saw that everyone had frost on their heads. People's sweat had turned into frost, LOL! I had ice in my hair too!

Final run in Scottsdale, AZ!

8 mi 01:06 08:11 pace

I ran a total of 28 miles while we were in AZ. Now it's back to the snow and cold. Probably best that I'm not running on concrete anymore. Knees are feeling it a bit, but I didn't have a choice in AZ. I didn't sleep well the night before this run. I think I just really missed my kids. It's great to be back to them.

Another run in Scottsdale, AZ

10 mi 01:22 08:14 pace

I had to do another 10. I just couldn't let this amazing weather go to waste! The lights were a little nicer to me this time. I think it's because this was a Saturday and it wasn't as busy on the roads, so I didn't have to run back and forth at the corners waiting for the lights for as long. I tried to run as much as I could on the road, but most of it was on concrete (I know...so bad for you). It was a great run. I wasn't ready to go back, but I didn't want anyone waiting for me. I was hoping to do at least the same pace as my 10 miles on Thursday, but I beat it!

Scottsdale, AZ

10.01 mi 01:25 08:27 pace

I set out to do 5 miles, or so...but I just couldn't let this amazing weather go to waste. I know I won't get this weather again until spring when I get back home. I will run again tomorrow and Monday and then it's back home. The only thing I didn't love about this run is that our hotel is in a very commercial area, so it was really busy on the road. I had several huge intersections I had to cross which hurt my pace. While I was waiting for the light to change I kept running back and forth at the corners. I got lots of smiles from people. I'm pretty sure I looked like a dork!

Las Vegas Ragnar Relay 2010...the after party!

At the Red Rock Casino where the finish line was. Many of us got 2 medals for doing Wasatch Back as well as Vegas.

Las Vegas Ragnar Relay 2010 Leg 3

5.73 mi 00:42 07:21 pace

Loved this run! The only thing that made me a little nervous was running on the freeway. I thought I had a pretty fierce headwind, but after talking to my team, I realized it was the wind coming from the constant traffic I was running against. Best part of this leg is that it was my last for LV Ragnar 2010!

Las Vegas Ragnar Relay 2010 Leg 2

4.7 mi 00:37 07:52 pace

My time is a little bit of a guess on this one. I (once again) forgot to turn on my watch at the beginning of the run and then forgot to stop it at the end! This leg was in the complete dark. I enjoyed it, but I tried not to pass the runner in front of me because I liked seeing his light. But I couldn't hold back for too long and had to pass.

Las Vegas Ragnar Relay 2010 Leg 1

4.62 mi 00:36 07:41 pace

Leg 1 was a little more hilly than I had expected, but it was a nice run! Pretty desert landscape! I was a little nervous before this leg. Had lots of butterflies in my stomach. But once I got running they went away and all was well!

Las Vegas Ragnar Relay 2010 Team "The Unknowns"

Going to go earn our "Saints and Sinners" medal for doing Wasatch Back and Vegas Ragnars.

Me, Sheri and Emily before the race!

Love Your Body 10K (10/9/10)

I thought this was going to be my first regular 10K. I did the Dirty Dash, which was a 10K, but it was a mud run and not timed. So the first runners for Love Your Body were routed the wrong way at a turn. They figured it out later and sent the majority of the runners the right way. Those of us that got sent the wrong way got to run an (almost) extra mile. My mom, being an optimist, said "That's okay, you really went the extra mile today." The part that was the bummer is that I walked a little right after my watch said 6.2 miles. I couldn't see the finish line in sight and I had tried to ramp it up between mile 5 and the end. It was very frustrating. After they adjusted times for the additional mile it showed me as 17th place overall and 2nd in my age group. So I ran 7.15 miles in 1:00. Pace was 8:20. Lessons learned...1. Things happen in races that you have no control over. 2. Just keep going and do your best regardless!

Dirty Dash 2010 (9/25/10)

Cousins at the Dirty Dash! Sheri Sorensen, Kim Karras and JaNae Eldredge. 6.2 miles in the mud with obstacles!

This was so much fun! Our team was a 5 person team: Sheri Sorensen, Kim Karras, Laura Murdoch, Lisa Clayton and JaNae Eldredge. It was much more fun getting dirty than it was getting cleaned up! Didn't get too many pictures since it was too dirty for cameras.

Brooklyn's Jog-a-thon

Ran with Brooklyn at her Jog-A-Thon. I have no idea what our pace was. I was really proud of her. She ran the whole way and got a 3rd place medal for her grade. She's very excited about her medal!

Moonlight Madness in Mapleton Half Marathon

Sheri Sorensen, JaNae Eldredge, Kelli Davey, Debra Knowlton and Laura Murdoch. We are ready for the Moonlight Half!

This picture is of Laura Murdoch, JaNae Eldredge, Debra Knowlton and Kelli Davey. I did 13.1 miles in 2:09. Pace was 9:50. This was my first half marathon! I went into it without a game plan, which was a mistake! I am semi-injured so at first I thought I would take it easy. At mile 6 I realized I was going to hurt whether I took it easy or just went for it, so the last 7.1 miles I ran in under an hour. It was a great race though! Nice enjoyable run! It rained, but it was pretty and refreshing!

Draper Days 2010 (7/17/10)

Heading into the finish line!

Me and my dad...and Brooklyn!

Tom and I on our 20th wedding anniversary! He is a very patient man to let me do this on our anniversary. Headed downtown to celebrate our anniversary after the race.

At the finish line!

Kelli Davey (she took 2nd in our division), Laura Murdoch and I at Draper Days 5K.

Draper Days 5K. 3.1 miles in 23:43. Pace was 7:28. This was my very 1st 5K. I took 1st in the women 35-39 division. It was lots of fun! Loved running and not worrying about traffic. Loved listening to my music and just keeping pace with the other runners!

Finished with Wasatch Back Ragnar Relay 2010.

Part of our team: Brenda Paulsen, Sheri Sorensen, Debra Knowlton, Laura Murdoch, JaNae Eldredge.

On the bus on our way to the finish line!

Running through the finish line!

A poster from my family!

Wasatch Back Ragnar Relay 2010. Leg 3.

Leg 3 was 3.34 miles in 28 minutes at a pace of 8:18. This was my last leg for Ragnar. Not too bad of a pace for 6 hours of sleep in the last 2 nights (3 on Thurs night and 3 on Fri night). This leg had an unexpected big hill in it, but the distance was so short and I was just happy it wasn't Avon Pass again (leg 1) ;)! This is a picture of our van with Brenda driving.

Wasatch Back Ragnar Relay 2010. Leg 2.

Leg 2 was 4.18 miles in 37 minutes at a pace of 8:47. My pace was better on this leg than the last. It was rated moderate (leg 1 was rated very hard). Leg 2 had rolling hills, but I thoroughly enjoyed this one. I was singing and smiling the whole time. It was so fun to have relatives come to cheer us on too!

Wasatch Back 2010. Leg 1.

Getting ready for my first leg of my first event EVER! I had no idea what to expect.
The hand off from Sheri to me. I started off way too fast. This was a good lesson in pacing myself.
Feeling pretty good at this point.
This leg was 7.35 miles in 1:21 at an 11 minute per mile pace. I was extremely disappointed in myself on this leg! I didn't want to walk any of my legs for Ragnar. My pace was just over an 8 minute mile for most of the leg until I had to walk. BUT I learned so much and I am so glad I did it. The course was harder than I expected. The distance was not long, but it was the conditions that made it difficult. It was in the middle of the hot day on a dirt road (had to focus on not twisting an ankle on the rocks), not enough to eat or drink and only 3 hrs of sleep the night before. AND it was ALL uphill. At one point on this leg, I determined that I could either collapse, or walk some of the leg. Great learning experience though.

Wasatch Back Ragnar 2010...Here We Go!

My New Found Love

I have been running for over 2 years now and have wanted to start a running blog for about the same amount of time. I haven't been able to find the time, but I have decided to make the time since running has become such an important part of my life. I started running in an unconventional way. I've always wanted to be a runner, but I just needed that push. In June of 2009 I watched 2 of my friends leave for the Wasatch Back Ragnar Relay. I mentioned to one of them that I really wanted to do that next year. You have to sign up for this race a year in advance. So after my friend was nice enough to take me seriously (although at the point I had registered for Wasatch Back Ragnar 2010, I had not even run around the block), I found myself committed to this crazy race. Upon registering, the team needed to know my 10K pace. I told my friend I had never run a 10K and she told me to take my 5K pace and double it. Well, I had never run a 5K either. I even had to use google to find out how far a 5K was. I was determined to tell my team my pace as soon as possible, so I got on my treadmill a couple days later and ran 3.1 miles. I didn't even know what a good pace was, so I pushed myself so I didn't have to tell them a slow pace. I ran 3.1 miles so hard that I made myself throw up. My pace was just under a 10 minute mile, but it's the farthest I had ever run. As soon as my friends started training for Wasatch Back 2010, they invited me to come along. I didn't sleep at all the night before. I was so worried I'd hold them back and they'd become frustrated with me. I didn't have the right shoes and they all had their Garmin watches, shoes they had been fit for and other running necessities. They were so nice to coach me to get me some of my own custom fit shoes, a watch and more. I got so I really enjoyed heading out for a run with my friends. My favorite things about running are that it made me feel productive and I saw many more things running than I did while driving. I really enjoyed getting to know my neighborhood this way. As soon as I felt the runner's high, I was hooked for good! I'm so grateful I was able to find this new found love that I'm so passionate about!
